Since the launch of this site, a few questions have been asked by site visitors. I'll try and answer them here.
Is it possible to see the original source documents?
I have donated the original source material to the library at Meadville Lombard Theological School
in Chicago. This is one of the main Unitarian Universalist
seminaries and they will be able to properly maintain the collection
and keep it available through their library
What else is in your collection which isn't on the site?
I've
tried to put a lot of the worthwhile stuff I have on this site, however
I admit that there are resources which I have not had the time to
scan. These includes pre-packets from former Youth Councils
meetings, ConCons, and other various conferences. Furthermore
some of my archives are in storage where I can't easily access
them. So anything in those archives will have to wait for some
day in the future.
Where did you get your collection?
Most
of this collection is left over from when I was in YRUU. I was
involved with YRUU as a youth from 1989 through 1993 and as YRUU
Programmes Specialist from September 1993 through August 1994. Since
1994 I have maintained some involvement through online efforts, working
with groups and churches, leading occasional workshops, and serving as
moderator of Youth Council 1999.
What about the "phone chains" which used to appear as an appendix in just about every issue of The Spider?
It
is true. The Spider used to come with an updated Youth Council
phone chain in every issue. It included the names, addresses, and
phone numbers of every Youth Council Representative in YRUU, and every
Steering Committee member. I still have quite a few of these, however
since the information is no longer accurate, I have decided not
to put this content on this website. The people who have those
phone numbers, or live at those addresses, don't need to be called up
by someone finding the number on the internet and wondering if its
still good. If you really do have a desire to see old
phone-chains, and have a valid reason for such a request, then contact me.
Can I have some of your Ben & Jerry's?
Nope, you've gotta get your own Ben & Jerry's!
What's this about the Flamingo?
Years
ago the Youth Office at the UUA was known as the Pink Flamingo
Lounge. There were a couple of flamingos (named Flora and Fauna)
who greeted you at the door, along with a variety of additional
Flamingo stuff around the office, and the 2 YRUU Programmes Specialists
were often refered to as 'flamingos'. When I first got involved
in YRUU you could use the phrase "Just give a call to The Pink Flamingo
Lounge" and everyone would know what you were talking about.
While it may no longer be known as the Pink Flamingo Lounge, that is
still how I think of that office and so along with a few hidden items scattered throughout the site , I've included a reference to this bit of history in the main banner to this site.
What's up with the advertising banner at the top of each page?
When
I first launched this site, it was being hosted on my own server at my
house. Unfortunately I don't have a very fast upstream connection
for sending data to the internet. But through registering the
domain name yruuspider.com, I did get a "free" web hosting account for
this site - it is "free" to me and has a much quicker connection to the
internet, but it does come with the downside of an advertising banner
at the top of the page. I hope this isn't too annoying for
people.
